BAFE SP203-4 is the third-party certification scheme for the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of emergency lighting systems. BAFE-SP203-4-registered firms demonstrate competence to insurers, fire-risk assessors, and most commercial clients. To register your firm under SP203-4 your engineers need the EAL Level 3 Award covered by this course - it is the recognised competency route.
The course covers BS 5266-1:2016 (UK Code of Practice for emergency lighting), BS EN 1838:2024 (lighting applications - emergency lighting, the European luminance standard), and BS EN 50172:2024 (emergency escape lighting systems - testing and maintenance). Together these set the design rules (illuminance levels, escape route widths, anti-panic areas, high-risk task lighting), installation requirements, and ongoing test schedules.
BS 5266-1 requires emergency lighting commissioning and periodic test certificates to be signed by a competent person aged 18 or over. The EAL Level 3 Award is the standard evidence of competence for these signatures - and is what BAFE SP203-4 firms expect of their engineers. You can attend the course at 16+, but you must be 18+ to sign certificates.
System design fundamentals (purpose, statutory drivers, illuminance levels, emergency duration: 1h / 2h / 3h, escape route vs anti-panic vs high-risk lighting, BS EN 1838 luminance requirements), installation and commissioning (wiring systems, central battery vs self-contained, addressable vs maintained vs non-maintained), inspection and maintenance schedules (monthly function test, annual full-duration discharge test), and certification documentation. EAL Level 3 Award exam at end of day.
Recommended but not formally required. The course assumes basic electrical knowledge (mains wiring, 230V AC, basic test instruments). Most attendees are practising electricians or fire-safety installers moving into emergency lighting work. If you are completely new to electrical work, take the Level 2 2365 Diploma first.
Emergency lighting is automatic luminaires that energise on mains failure to illuminate escape routes, anti-panic open areas, and high-risk task areas - keeping people safe during evacuation. Unlike regular lighting, it has a battery backup (typically 1-3 hours), is required by Fire Safety Order 2005 and Building Regulations, and must be tested monthly per BS EN 50172. Periodic inspection findings drive a separate certificate.
