Clear and well-paced. The tutors made the regulations easy to understand and walked us through the Amendment 4 changes. Passed first time on the open-book exam.

Great refresher course. Everything you need to know for the latest amendment - the Chapter 57 changes were explained really clearly. Back on the tools the following Monday.

Needed it for NICEIC renewal. Three days, open-book exam, done. The mock papers we sat on day two were almost identical in style to the real thing — no surprises.

Everything you need
to know, upfront.

What does the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification cover?+

The City & Guilds 2382-26 (18th Edition) covers BS 7671:2018 incorporating Amendment 4 (2026) — the current UK Wiring Regulations. Topics include protection against electric shock, earthing arrangements, cable selection, circuit protection, inspection and testing requirements, and special locations (bathrooms, swimming pools, solar PV, EV charging, caravans, agricultural premises). Amendment 4 adds the new Chapter 57 plus updated SPD (surge protective devices) and AFDD (arc fault detection devices) guidance.

Is the 18th Edition exam open book?+

Yes. The 18th Edition exam is open book — you can reference the BS 7671 Wiring Regulations book throughout the multiple-choice exam. Knowing your way around the book is more important than memorisation, which is why we spend course time on navigation and section signposting, not rote learning.

How long is the 18th Edition qualification valid?+

The 18th Edition qualification does not formally expire, but BS 7671 itself is updated by amendments. Amendment 4 was published 2026 and replaced the previous A2:2022 version; you should update to the current amendment within 12 months of release to stay competent and to keep insurance / scheme membership current. NICEIC, NAPIT, and most contractors check that your 18th Edition reflects the current amendment.

Do I get a copy of the BS 7671 book with the course?+

No — you need to purchase your own copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 (the current "18th Edition" book) separately. Most candidates buy it ahead of the course. The IET sells it directly; Amazon and electrical wholesalers stock it. RRP is around £100; bring it to every day of the course and to the exam.

What is the difference between Amendment 4 (2026) and earlier amendments?+

Amendment 4 (published 2026) is the latest revision of BS 7671:2018. Headline changes include a new Chapter 57 on prosumer electrical installations (covering battery storage and microgeneration interaction), updated guidance on surge protective devices (SPDs) and arc fault detection devices (AFDDs), revised special-location requirements (notably EV charging), and refreshed Appendix 7 information. If your current 18th Edition cert was for A2:2022, you are now out of date and should sit the 2382-26 to bring it current.

Who needs the 18th Edition qualification?+

Every practising electrician working in the UK needs a current 18th Edition. It is mandatory for: NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, STROMA approved-contractor scheme membership; JIB/ECS Gold Card application; Part P self-certification (where Part P applies); most main-contractor pre-qualification; and any work where you sign off compliance against BS 7671. Apprentices, electrical mates, and improvers should hold it before solo testing or certifying work.
