How long do I have to complete the online course?

You have up to 12 months of portal access from enrolment. Most candidates complete the theory study in 4-8 weeks of part-time evening/weekend revision. You can sit the exam whenever you feel ready within the 12-month window.

Do I get a copy of the BS 7671 book?

Accepted Answer

No - you need to purchase your own copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 separately. The IET sells it directly; Amazon and electrical wholesalers stock it. RRP is around £100. Having your own copy is essential because the City & Guilds exam is open book - you reference the book throughout, so getting familiar with how it's organised is the key revision activity.

How is the online 18th Edition different from the classroom course?

Both award the same City & Guilds 2382-26 certificate on passing the same exam. The classroom version (£439, 3 days at Cheshunt) includes live tutor walkthroughs of Amendment 4 changes, hands-on regulation navigation drills, group Q&A, and the exam on the final day - most learners pass first time. The online version (£49, 12-month self-paced) gives you the learning material only; suitable if you have strong existing BS 7671 working knowledge and just need an affordable refresh.

Is the online 18th Edition recognised by NICEIC and NAPIT?

Accepted Answer

Yes - the qualification awarded is the same City & Guilds 2382-26 regardless of how you study. NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, and STROMA approved-contractor schemes accept the C&G 2382-26 certificate; they do not distinguish between online and classroom routes. The certificate itself does not mention 'online' or 'classroom'.

Can complete beginners take the online 18th Edition?

Accepted Answer

Not recommended. The 18th Edition assumes basic electrical knowledge (Ohm's Law, AC/DC fundamentals, single-phase wiring) and the online format has no live tutor to walk you through complex regulations. Complete beginners should take Level 2 2365 first, or sit the in-person 3-day classroom version of 18th Edition where the tutor explains tricky topics directly.

How is the exam structured and what is the pass mark?

The City & Guilds 2382-26 exam is a 2-hour open-book multiple-choice online paper. Pass mark is 60%. BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 is the only permitted reference - your own copy. The exam tests your ability to find and apply the correct regulations - speed of navigation matters more than rote recall.

You can re-sit the exam - there is no limit on attempts. Re-sit fees are paid to whichever exam centre you book through (around £140-£170). Tutor support continues throughout your 12-month portal access, so you can revise and re-attempt within the same enrolment window without re-paying the £49.

Yes - the course materials are updated to reflect BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 (the current Amendment 4 version published 2026). Headline changes covered include the new Chapter 57 on prosumer installations (battery storage and microgeneration), updated SPD and AFDD guidance, revised EV charging special-location requirements, and the refreshed Appendix 7.

How do I get exam access after I finish studying?

Contact our team and we will arrange your exam booking - either at our Cheshunt centre (recommended if you can travel) or at any other approved C&G centre near you. Exam fees are paid to the host centre at the time of booking. Most learners book once they have completed at least 80% of the online portal content.
