The 2921-34 is a specialist CPD qualification for practising electricians who already meet the published industry entry requirements. It is recognised by JIB/ECS and carries the Electrician Plus kitemark. OZEV authorisation for grant-funded work is a separate business approval process that currently requires eligible Competent Person Scheme or ECA membership; this qualification does not grant OZEV status by itself.
No. Under BS 7671 and Part P of the Building Regulations, fixed electrical work in domestic properties — including EV charge point installation — must be carried out by a qualified electrician and notified to building control. For OZEV grant-funded installations, the work must be done by an OZEV-approved installer holding the City & Guilds 2921-34 qualification. DIY installation is unsafe and will void manufacturer warranties.
For a domestic home EV charger, installation typically costs £800–£1,200 depending on the unit, the cable run, and whether a consumer unit upgrade is needed. Commercial EV charging station installation costs vary widely — a single workplace 7kW charging point is similar to domestic, while multi-bay rapid-charger sites can run into tens of thousands. OZEV grants and the Workplace Charging Scheme can offset costs when the work is carried out by an OZEV-approved installer.
Eligible households, landlords and businesses may be able to use current OZEV chargepoint grants, including the Workplace Charging Scheme. Grant work must be completed by an OZEV-authorised installer using eligible equipment. Authorisation is applied for separately and is not awarded automatically with the City & Guilds 2921-34 qualification.
Commercial EV charging station installation requires load calculations on the building supply, three-phase distribution where bays exceed single-phase capacity, and protective devices selected to BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice 5th Edition (2023). It also includes integration with energy-management and networked charging systems, plus submission for OZEV/WCS funding where applicable. The 2921-34 course covers all of this for qualified electricians moving into commercial EV work.
