What is the BAFE DS301 scheme?+
BAFE DS301 is the third-party certification scheme for the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of domestic fire detection and alarm systems (BS 5839-6). It is the domestic equivalent of BAFE SP203-1 (commercial). BAFE-registered firms covered by DS301 demonstrate competence to insurers, regulators, and clients - the qualification on this course is the engineer-level qualification a DS301-registered firm needs.
What is the difference between domestic and commercial fire alarm courses?+
The domestic course (BS 5839-6) covers fire detection in dwellings, HMOs, individual flats, and Grade D-F systems. The commercial course (BS 5839-1) covers non-domestic buildings - offices, retail, warehouses, schools, hospitals, Grade A-C systems. They are distinct British Standards with different design, install, and maintenance requirements. If you cover both - which most fire installers do - the Combined Course (£1,098) bundles both for less than two standalones.
What does the DS301 course actually cover over 2 days?+
Day 1: UK fire safety legislation (Regulatory Reform Order, Building Regulations Approved Document B), BS 5839-6 in-depth (grades A-F, categories LD1-LD3, dwelling types in scope), risk-based design principles, detector siting and types (ionisation vs optical vs heat vs CO), sounder strategy. Day 2: practical installation work on real Grade D rigs, commissioning procedures, fault-finding, certification documents, and BAFE DS301 documentation requirements. Exam at the end of day 2.
Do I need to be a qualified electrician to attend?+
Recommended but not formally required. The course assumes basic electrical knowledge (mains wiring, 230V AC, basic test instruments). Most attendees are 2365-qualified electricians moving into domestic fire alarm work, or experienced fire alarm engineers formalising domestic certification. If you are new to electrical work, take the Level 2 2365 Diploma first.
Will I be able to issue compliant certificates after the course?+
Yes. The course covers design, installation, and commissioning certificates required under BS 5839-6 - the documents you issue to homeowner / landlord / housing association clients. Combined with insurer / BAFE DS301 firm registration these certificates demonstrate compliant work and (for HMOs and rental properties) satisfy fire safety duty-holder obligations.
Do I need the commercial version too?+
If you only work on domestic properties, the DS301 course alone is sufficient. If you also work on offices, retail units, HMO blocks classified as commercial, or any non-domestic premises, you also need the BS 5839-1 qualification - either the standalone SP203-1 course (£549) or the Combined Course (£1,098) which bundles both at a saving.
