The commercial course (BS 5839-1 - this course) covers non-domestic buildings: offices, retail, warehouses, schools, hospitals, multi-occupancy buildings classified as commercial. The domestic course (BS 5839-6) covers fire detection in dwellings, HMOs, and individual flats. Different categories, grades, and design rules apply. Most professional installers cover both - the Combined Course (£1,098) bundles both for less than two standalones.

Can I service existing systems after this course?

Yes. The course covers maintenance protocols (monthly/quarterly/annual servicing schedules), test procedures, fault rectification, log book completion, and documentation for ongoing system management. Maintenance contracts are a major recurring-revenue stream for SP203-registered firms.

Do I need to be a qualified electrician?

Recommended. The course assumes basic electrical knowledge - mains wiring, 230V AC, basic test instruments, and an understanding of current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Most attendees are practising electricians (2365-qualified or equivalent) moving into fire alarm work, or experienced fire alarm engineers formalising commercial certification.

Choosing the right category for a building's risk profile is a core BS 5839-1 design skill.

False alarm reduction is a core BS 5839-1 topic and a major focus of the course. Topics: appropriate detector type selection (avoiding optical in steamy areas, etc), siting away from environmental causes (cooking, smoking, vehicle exhausts), verification mechanisms (coincidence detection, delay-and-investigate), and contractual reduction targets. False-alarm reduction is increasingly written into commercial contracts and regulator/fire-service expectations.
