Funded Electrician Training in 2026: Skills Bootcamps, Grants & Finance Options
There are several ways to pay for electrician training in 2026 — from government-funded Skills Bootcamps and Advanced Learner Loans to provider payment plans. This guide covers every option so you can find the most affordable route for your situation.
Important: LTS is a private, fee-charged training provider. We do not offer government-funded training, grants, loans, or free courses. All LTS courses are paid for by the student. The government funding options described below are delivered by separate providers and come with significant limitations. LTS offers 0% interest payment plans on packages and diploma courses — you can book your course and start training immediately with no waiting.
Key Facts
- Skills Bootcamps: Free for unemployed, but limited availability, region-dependent, and places not guaranteed
- Advanced Learner Loans: Cover Level 3+ qualifications, but come with interest, repayment obligations, and a weeks-long application process
- Adult Education Budget: Fully or co-funded for eligible adults, but strict eligibility, limited provision, and may not cover the full Gold Card pathway
- Local authority grants: Sporadic, competitive, and no guarantee of availability
- LTS payment plans: 0% interest, no credit check, deposits from £500, start training immediately — available on packages and diploma courses
Skills Bootcamps
Skills Bootcamps are government-funded intensive training programmes designed to help adults gain skills in sectors with labour shortages. Electrical installation has been included in some regional bootcamp programmes.
LTS does not deliver Skills Bootcamps. These are run by separate government-approved providers.
How Skills Bootcamps Work
- Duration: Up to 16 weeks of intensive training
- Cost: Free for unemployed learners; employers may contribute a percentage for employed learners
- Eligibility: Adults aged 19+ who are employed, self-employed, or unemployed and living in England
- Outcome: A recognised qualification plus, for unemployed learners, a guaranteed job interview
The Limitations of Skills Bootcamps
While Skills Bootcamps sound attractive on paper, there are significant drawbacks to be aware of:
- Limited availability — electrical bootcamps are not offered in every region or every funding cycle. Many areas have no electrical provision at all.
- Places fill quickly — when programmes do run, they are often oversubscribed with long waiting lists.
- No control over timing — you cannot choose when to start. You are dependent on the funding cycle and provider schedule.
- Quality varies — bootcamp providers vary in facilities, instructor experience, and pass rates. You may not have a choice of provider in your area.
- May not cover the full pathway — most bootcamps focus on a single qualification level, not the complete route to Gold Card.
With LTS, you choose your start date, train at a City & Guilds and EAL accredited centre with a 4.8/5 rating, and follow a structured pathway from Level 2 through to Gold Card — all on your terms.
Advanced Learner Loans
Advanced Learner Loans work similarly to university student loans. They cover the cost of eligible qualifications and you only start repaying when your income exceeds the repayment threshold.
Advanced Learner Loans are not available at LTS. These can only be used at specific approved providers.
Key Details
- Eligibility: Aged 19+ studying a Level 3 or above qualification at an approved provider
- Covers: Full course fees for eligible qualifications
- Repayment: Only when earning above the income threshold (currently £25,000 per year for Plan 5 loans)
- Interest: Variable, linked to RPI — meaning you repay more than you borrowed
- Application: Administered through Student Finance England, typically takes 2–4 weeks
The Limitations of Advanced Learner Loans
- Interest charges — unlike LTS 0% payment plans, Advanced Learner Loans accrue interest from the moment you take them out. Over time, you can end up repaying significantly more than the original course fee.
- Limited provider choice — loans can only be used at approved providers, which limits your options. You may not be able to train at the centre with the best facilities, pass rates, or location for you.
- Application delays — the process takes 2–4 weeks, delaying your start. With LTS, you can book and start on the next available date.
- Only covers Level 3+ — the loan does not cover Level 2, which is the essential foundation. You still need to pay for Level 2 separately.
- Long-term debt — the loan sits on your record and is deducted from your salary for years after qualification.
With LTS 0% payment plans, you pay exactly the course price — no interest, no long-term debt, no application process.
Adult Education Budget (AEB)
The Adult Education Budget provides government funding for adult skills training. In some areas, electrical qualifications are fully funded or co-funded for eligible learners.
AEB funding is not available at LTS.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility varies but typically includes:
- Adults aged 19+ who are unemployed and receiving benefits
- Adults earning below a specified income threshold
- Those who have not previously achieved a Level 2 qualification
- Specific priority groups identified by local skills plans
The Limitations of AEB Funding
- Strict eligibility — most employed adults do not qualify, particularly if they already hold a Level 2 or above qualification in any subject.
- Limited provision — not all areas offer AEB-funded electrical courses. Availability depends on local authority priorities.
- May not cover the full pathway — AEB typically funds single qualifications, not comprehensive packages like the Gold Card.
- Slower pace — AEB-funded courses are often delivered through colleges at a pace that suits academic calendars, not career changers who want to qualify quickly.
With LTS, full-time students can complete the Gold Card Package classroom training in just 15–17 weeks — far faster than most college-based AEB programmes.
Local Authority Grants
Some local councils offer grants for residents retraining in occupations with identified skills shortages. Electricians are frequently included in these schemes because of the ongoing national shortage of qualified electrical workers.
LTS does not administer or provide local authority grants.
The Limitations of Local Authority Grants
- Sporadic availability — grants depend on council budgets and are not offered consistently. They may run for a few months, then disappear for years.
- Competitive applications — when grants are available, they are usually oversubscribed. There is no guarantee you will receive funding.
- Partial funding — many grants cover only a portion of course fees, leaving you to fund the remainder yourself anyway.
- Restricted to approved providers — even if you receive a grant, it may only be valid at certain providers — which may not be the best option for your training.
LTS Payment Plans (0% Interest, No Credit Check)
While government funding options are limited, slow, and uncertain, LTS offers a straightforward way to fund your training that you can arrange today.
All LTS courses are fee-charged. Payment plans are available on packages and diploma courses to help spread the cost. Short courses are paid in full at booking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I combine government funding with an LTS payment plan? No. Government funding programmes (Skills Bootcamps, AEB, Advanced Learner Loans) are delivered by separate providers and cannot be applied to LTS courses. All LTS courses are fee-charged with 0% interest payment plans available on packages and diploma courses.
How long do government funding applications take? Skills Bootcamp and AEB places can take weeks to confirm — if they are available at all. Advanced Learner Loan applications typically take 2–4 weeks. LTS payment plans can be arranged at the time of booking with no waiting period.
What if I do not qualify for any government funding? LTS 0% payment plans on packages and diploma courses are available to everyone with no eligibility requirements beyond paying the deposit. No credit check is required. This is why most of our students choose LTS — it is faster, simpler, and you know exactly what you are paying with no hidden costs or interest.
