My Journey to Becoming a Qualified Electrician: Halfway Through Level 2 and Moving Forward

Dias Dos Santos shares his journey of changing careers from the NHS into the electrical industry, looking for a more secure, hands-on role that can’t easily be replaced by automation. He chose the Gold Card route at Learn Trade Skills because it offers a clear, structured pathway covering all the key qualifications and support needed to become fully qualified. Now halfway through Level 2, Dias feels his confidence growing thanks to the step-by-step teaching, practical workshop sessions, and strong tutor support. He’s focused on completing Level 2 and continuing his progress toward becoming a qualified electrician.

Before starting my journey into the electrical industry, I was working in the NHS. It was a stable job, but over time I started thinking more seriously about my future.

With AI and automation beginning to take over many roles, I wanted a career that felt more secure, something practical, hands-on, and always in demand.

That’s what led me to explore becoming an electrician.

Why I Chose the Gold Card Route

Like many people making a career change, I wasn’t just looking for a short courses, I wanted a long-term pathway into a stable trade.

I wanted a career built on real, practical skills that couldn’t easily be replaced. While researching training centres, I came across Learn Trade Skills, and they immediately stood out. They offer a full Gold Card package that includes everything you need from start to finish, including Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, the 18th Edition, Part P, Testing & Inspection, as well as full NVQ and AM2 support.

What really appealed to me was how structured and comprehensive it was. Instead of booking separate courses at different places, everything is mapped out as one clear journey.

It was also close to where I live and more cost-effective than doing everything individually elsewhere.

Another big bonus was the included Basic Electrical CPD Course before starting Level 2 at no extra cost. That gave me a much stronger foundation before jumping into the main qualification.

And something I really appreciate is that Learn Trade Skills also supports students with job opportunities through industry connections, WireNow. For someone like me coming from outside the trade, that kind of support is incredibly valuable.

Starting Fresh with Level 2

When I started the Level 2 Electrical Installation course, I was completely new to the trade. I had no electrical background at all, so honestly, I was nervous at the beginning.

I didn’t know what to expect or whether I’d be able to keep up.

What helped straight away was how beginner-friendly the course is. Everything starts from the basics, and nothing is assumed. The tutors explain things clearly and take the time to make sure you understand.

Before Level 2 even began, the full-time Gold Card package at Learn Trade Skills includes an exclusive Basic Electrical Course. It gave me a strong introduction to the key principles, safety practices, and hands-on skills needed for the trade. It made a huge difference in helping me feel prepared, and when I started Level 2, everything felt much more connected and far less overwhelming.

Halfway Through Level 2: Building Confidence

Now that I’m halfway through Level 2, I can genuinely feel the progress I’ve made.

Concepts that felt confusing at the start are now starting to click, and my confidence has grown a lot.

The way the course is taught step by step really helps. Learning about electrical safety, wiring principles, and installation methods in stages makes it manageable.

The practical sessions are especially important being able to apply the theory in the workshop is where everything really starts to make sense.

That combination of classroom learning and hands-on training has been key to building confidence.

Support That Makes a Difference

One of the biggest positives of the course has been the support from the tutors.

They are approachable, patient, and genuinely want you to succeed. No question ever feels like a stupid question, which is so important when you’re new.

The one-to-one guidance in the workshop has been especially helpful. If I make a mistake, they take the time to explain what went wrong and help me understand how to improve.

Coming from a non-trade background, that level of support has made a huge difference and has kept me motivated throughout.

A New Perspective

This course has completely changed how I see the electrical industry and myself.

I’ve gone from wondering whether I could do this, to genuinely believing that I belong in the trade.

I also think the Basic Electrical Course included at the start is incredibly helpful for beginners, especially for people exploring a career change or coming from a different background.

It would even be valuable for people in other trades who want to add electrical skills to what they already do.

My Advice to Anyone Thinking About It

If you’re coming from a different career like I was, my advice is simple:

Don’t let being new put you off.

Everyone starts somewhere, and this course is designed to support beginners. If you’re willing to learn, ask questions, and put in the effort, Level 2 gives you a strong foundation and the confidence to move forward.

What’s Next for Me?

Right now, my focus is on finishing Level 2 strong, especially the practical exams and passing all the theory units. Reaching the halfway point has shown me that this goal is achievable, and I’m more motivated than ever to keep going. I’m looking forward to building on what I’ve learned and continuing the journey towards becoming a fully qualified electrician.

Final Thoughts

Switching careers is a big decision, especially coming from a stable role like the NHS, but I’m really glad I took the leap. Halfway through Level 2, I feel more confident, more focused, and optimistic about the future. For anyone thinking about a career in electrics, especially beginners, this has been a really positive experience so far.
