Step 2: Four Steps to Success in Becoming an Electrician

LEARN TRADE SKILLS

Step 2: Gain Practical Experience or Pursue Level 3 Electrotechnical Craft Diploma

Upon successfully completing the Professional Electrician Package Course, you have two distinct pathways for the next stage in your journey.

Option 1: Gaining Experience

1. CITB Health & Safety Awareness: Site Safety Plus Course:

Take the next step by enrolling in a 1-day CITB Health & Safety Awareness course. This certification not only enhances your safety knowledge but also qualifies you for an ECS White Card, officially recognising you as an “electrical labourer.”

2. Field Experience and Competent Persons Scheme:

Embark on a hands-on journey, gaining two years of field experience. Join a Competent Persons Scheme like NICEIC or NAPIT, empowering you to self-certify your installations, work independently, and unlock significant income opportunities.

– Entry-Level Positions:

Start your practical experience with entry-level positions, working under the guidance of seasoned electricians. This hands-on training is crucial for honing your skills and knowledge, preparing you for more intricate projects in the future.

– Volunteering or Internships:

Consider volunteering or interning with local electrical companies or organisations. This not only provides valuable exposure to various facets of the industry but also allows you to network, learn from professionals, and apply your skills in real-world scenarios.

Once you have accumulated a minimum of five years of experience, you can seamlessly progress to step 3 of your journey.

Option 2: Level 3 Electrotechnical Craft Diploma

Alternatively, for those seeking an expedited route to becoming an electrician, the apprenticeship option is available. Complete the Level 2 Electrotechnical Diploma exams and enrol in the Level 3 Electrotechnical Craft Diploma (Level 3 2365), a comprehensive programme that can be pursued on a full-time basis. This course typically spans for 7 weeks long, providing in-depth training and practical experience. Upon successful completion of the diploma, you can seamlessly transition to step 3 of the process, advancing further in your journey toward becoming a qualified electrician.

The Ultimate Guide to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)

The electrical industry in the UK is built on a foundation of safety, compliance, and professionalism. At the heart of this foundation lies BS 7671 – the IET Wiring Regulations, the standard every electrician must follow. With the recent publication of Amendment 3 to the 18th Edition in 2024, staying up to date is no longer optional — it’s a professional obligation.

Over my 40 years working as an electrician and 20 years lecturing, I have seen first-hand how much the trade has changed. From the shift towards renewable energy to the rapid growth of electric vehicle charging and smart technology, each new edition or amendment of the Wiring Regulations reflects real-world changes that electricians must adapt to.

This guide will walk you through the essentials of the 18th Edition, explain what Amendment 3 (2024) means for your work, highlight when the 19th Edition is expected, and show you how to find a reputable 18th Edition course in London. Whether you are just starting your journey or you’ve been on the tools for decades, understanding the Wiring Regulations is the key to staying safe, compliant, and employable in today’s industry.

Changing Career from Police Officer to Electrician in the UK: A Step-by-Step Guide

Changing careers is never an easy decision — especially if you’ve spent years serving as a police officer. Policing demands resilience, discipline, and a commitment to public service, but many officers reach a stage where the long shifts, the stress, or the lack of flexibility become overwhelming. I’ve met countless ex-cops who felt they needed a new challenge — one that still makes use of their problem-solving skills and attention to detail, but also offers stability, financial growth, and more control over their lives.

That’s why more and more people from policing are retraining as electricians. And it’s no surprise why. The UK is facing a significant skills shortage across construction and especially in electrical trades. According to the Office for National Statistics, the construction industry had 13,000 more vacancies than pre-pandemic levels, even as other sectors saw declines

Electrical Training for Businesses: Why HMRC’s New EV Fuel Advisory Rates Signal a Turning Point for Employers

From 1 September 2025, HMRC will introduce a major change for businesses running electric company cars: the single advisory fuel rate of 7p per mile will be scrapped, replaced with 8p per mile for home charging and 14p per mile for public charging. This split reflects the reality that charging an electric vehicle at home is far cheaper than relying on public chargers.
