My Journey to Becoming a Qualified Electrician: Finishing Level 2 and Moving Ahead

At Learn Trade Skills, we’re proud to support individuals at all stages of their career journey — from complete beginners to fully qualified electricians. One of those individuals is Ike, a determined and focused student who recently completed his Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365) and is now progressing into Level 3 as part of our Gold Card Package. In this article, Ike shares his personal experience of switching careers, mastering new skills, and growing both professionally and personally. His story highlights what’s possible with the right training, structure, and support.

Hi, I’m Ike. I’m 22 years old, and not too long ago, I made a decision that completely changed the course of my life — I began my journey to become a fully qualified electrician through the Gold Card package at Learn Trade Skills. As I write this, I’ve just completed my Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365), and I’ve recently started Level 3. This is my story so far — how it all started, what I’ve learned, and where I’m headed next.

Why I Chose the Gold Card Route

Like many people my age, I was searching for a fresh start and a career that offered both stability and personal satisfaction. I’d been thinking about a change for a while and eventually landed on electrical work. I didn’t have any trade experience, but I was eager to learn and ready to take on a new challenge.

While researching training centres, I found Learn Trade Skills. Right away, they stood out. They offered a full Gold Card package, which included everything I’d need from start to finish — Level 2, Level 3, the 18th Edition, Part P, Testing & Inspection, NVQ, and AM2. On top of that, it was close to where I live and more cost-effective than taking individual courses elsewhere.

The course being comprehensive and structured gave me confidence. I wasn’t just signing up for a class — I was starting a long-term journey toward becoming a qualified electrician.

Starting Fresh with Level 2

Beginning Level 2 was a big step for me. I didn’t have any background in electrics, but from day one, the instructors made everything approachable. We started with the fundamentals — Ohm’s Law, basic maths, circuit theory, and electrical safety.

What stood out to me was how practical and hands-on the course was. Even though we were covering technical subjects, it was taught in a way that connected theory with real-world application. Learning how to wire a ring circuit, understanding how current flows, and performing safe isolation procedures — these were things I’d never done before, but now they’re second nature.

At first, the maths side of things caught me off guard. I didn’t realise how much calculation was involved — volt drops, power formulas, cable sizing — but I grew to enjoy it. It challenged my brain and gave me a new sense of confidence.

Support That Makes a Difference

The support at Learn Trade Skills has been amazing. The tutors are not only knowledgeable but genuinely want to see you succeed. Even when I wasn’t in class, I could ask questions, revise using the course materials, and get help with anything I was stuck on.

I pushed myself outside the classroom too. I’d stay up late revising, practising calculations, and re-reading notes. That extra effort paid off — I passed Level 2 on my first attempt with an average score of 85%, and I’ve been one of the top students in my group.

A New Perspective

Looking back, I’ve changed a lot — not just in my skills but as a person. Six or seven weeks into the course, I already started to notice the difference. I felt more focused, more capable, and more driven than I’d ever felt before.

Learning a trade isn’t just about the technical skills; it’s about building resilience, thinking critically, and becoming more independent. I came into this wanting a career change, but I’ve found much more than that. I’ve found purpose.

Moving On to Level 3

Now that I’ve completed Level 2, I’ve already begun Level 3 — ahead of schedule. I’ve been reading ahead, preparing for exams, and doing everything I can to stay one step ahead. The goal is clear: pass every stage, complete the NVQ and AM2, and get my Gold Card.

Level 3 is more advanced, and I’m excited to deepen my knowledge — from design principles to fault diagnosis, inspection and testing, and complex wiring systems. This next stage is what will really set me apart and prepare me for real-life work as an electrician.

My Advice to Anyone Thinking About It

If you’re sitting on the fence about getting into the electrical trade — especially if you’re considering a complete career switch — my advice is: do it. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a screwdriver or if maths was never your thing in school. What matters is your commitment to learning.

Yes, there are challenges — the theory can get intense, and the pace can be fast — but it’s doable if you stay focused. And at Learn Trade Skills, you’re not alone. The tutors are there to help, the structure is solid, and there’s a clear path from beginner to qualified.

What’s Next for Me?

Right now, I’m focused on completing Level 3, passing all my exams, and ticking off each step of the Gold Card journey. I’ve still got the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382), Part P, Inspection & Testing (2391-52), and the NVQ Level 3 (2357) ahead — but I’m ready.

My goal is simple: get qualified, get my Gold Card, and start working full-time as an electrician. I want to be out there on-site, applying everything I’ve learned and building a solid career.

Final Thoughts

I started this journey wanting to try something new — and it’s been more than just a course. It’s been a complete personal transformation. From knowing nothing about electrics to passing Level 2 with distinction, from being unsure of my direction to feeling confident and focused — it’s been a powerful journey.

And I’m only halfway there.

I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far, and I’m excited for what’s ahead. Learn Trade Skills has given me the tools, the support, and the structure — now it’s up to me to keep pushing, keep learning, and finish what I started.
