The EAL Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Domestic & Commercial Fire Alarm Systems is a comprehensive, EAL-approved qualification covering both BS 5839-6 (domestic fire alarms) and BS 5839-1 (commercial fire alarms).
Delivered by Learn Trade Skills, this combined programme develops advanced competence in designing, installing, testing, commissioning, and maintaining fire detection and fire alarm systems across all building types — from single-family dwellings to large commercial buildings.

This combined course delivers full coverage of fire detection and emergency lighting design, installation, testing, and maintenance. Learners will develop technical and regulatory competence across three key areas:

1. Domestic Fire Alarm Systems (BS 5839-6)

  • System categories and grades for domestic premises

  • Design principles for detectors, call points, and sounders

  • Cable types, zoning, and circuit layouts

  • Installation, commissioning, and testing procedures

  • Certification, maintenance, and fault-finding processes

2. Commercial Fire Alarm Systems (BS 5839-1)

  • Fire detection system types: conventional, addressable, and wireless

  • System design and spacing requirements for commercial environments

The qualification is assessed through an EAL-set, centre-marked controlled knowledge assessment.

 Through a written knowledge assessment set by EAL and marked by Learn Trade Skills.
