Course Content:

This Level 3 Award equips learners with the knowledge and understanding required to design, install, commission, inspect, and maintain emergency lighting systems that meet British and European standards.

You’ll learn how to interpret regulations, plan compliant systems, and ensure ongoing maintenance in accordance with safety legislation. The course combines classroom-based learning with design analysis and case-based practical examples to reinforce compliance principles.

  • Purpose and legal responsibilities of emergency lighting systems
  • Key terminology and categories of emergency lighting (escape route, open area, high-risk task, standby)
  • Application and interpretation of BS 5266-1, BS EN 1838, and BS EN 50172
  • Design requirements – illuminance levels, spacing, emergency duration, and system types
  • Installation standards, wiring systems, circuit arrangements, and control devices
  • Commissioning processes and certification documentation
  • Inspection and maintenance regimes – monthly, annual, and duration testing
  • Record keeping and fault reporting procedures
  • Responsibilities of duty holders and compliance documentation under safety legislation

The qualification is assessed through an EAL-set, centre-marked controlled knowledge assessment.

  • Format: Written knowledge paper
  • Pass Mark: 60% (Pass or Refer)
  • Resits: Allowed using alternative assessment versions

Verification: Internal quality assurance and EAL external moderation

  • Certification is issued upon successful completion of both assessments.
