Course Overview

This Level 3 Dual Award qualification is a City & Guilds Approved professional training programme for qualified electricians who wish to gain dual competence in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and electrical energy storage systems (EESS).

Learners will develop the technical knowledge and hands-on skills required to design, install, test, commission and maintain small-scale solar PV and battery storage systems safely and compliantly.

The course aligns with the latest IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018 + Amd 2/3) and relevant industry standards for renewable and energy storage technologies.

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Installation & Maintenance of Electric Vehicle Charging Installations (2921-34)
Entry Requirement:
  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) OR current Competent Person Scheme (CPS) registration (e.g. NICEIC, NAPIT).
  • Evidence is required.

Course Content:

This course provides an in-depth introduction to solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, covering design principles, installation best practices, testing, commissioning, and maintenance.

Learners will explore:

  • Solar PV system components and architectures.
  • DC/AC design and safety procedures.
  • Inverter configuration and fault diagnosis.
  • Grid connection and export limitation (G98/G99/G100).

Integration with energy storage systems (EESS) and EV charging.

This course covers the essential knowledge and practical skills required to design, install, test, and commission small electrical energy storage systems in line with current industry standards.

Learners will cover:

  • Key documentation, legislation, and non-statutory guidance (EAW, HASAWA, MCS). 
  • Safe working practices and isolation procedures for EESS installations.
  • System design, architecture, and selection of components and batteries.
  • Installation considerations, system testing, and commissioning procedures.
  • Maintenance, handover documentation, and client operation guidance.
  • Integration of energy storage with solar PV, EV charging, and grid export limitation (G100).

By the end, learners will be able to design and install EESS systems safely and effectively, meeting City & Guilds and ECS CPD standards

  • Qualified electricians expanding into renewable energy installations.
  • ECS Gold Card holders (Installation, Maintenance, or Domestic).
  • Professionals installing or maintaining solar, EV, or battery systems seeking ECS CPD.
  • Employers training their teams for integrated solar and energy storage work.
